Madison, ALA, – Jean Keyes, a resident at The Madison Village, recently celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends, and community staff. Mrs. Keyes was born in Limestone County, Alabama, in 1920.

She graduated from Tanner High School in 1938 and married her sweetheart in 1944 the night before he left for deployment to join the WWII effort. While her husband was deployed, Mrs. Keyes joined in the Rosie the Riveter movement and worked as a crane operator.

After the war, Mrs. Keyes graduated from the now University of North Alabama, worked as a special needs teacher, and raised three daughters, Carol, Claira, and Martha, who passed away at 5 ½ years old. Mrs. Keyes proudly boasts of her position as the oldest member of First Christian Church and the oldest member of her family. Mrs. Keyes has been a resident at The Madison Village for five years.

  • What’s the secret to your longevity?
    JK: There’s no secret to longevity, and I’m not sure how I did it because I don’t feel 100 years old!
  • What keeps you going?
    JK: Family and Friends.
  • What is the most important invention of your lifetime?
    JK: When I was born, nothing was in the home… running water, electricity… but those are just necessary now. I love that things are just more convenient.
  • What has been the best decade for you?
    JK: This one because I don’t have to do anything; everyone does it for me!
  • What is your best advice for young people?
    JK: Get an education and do something that you love!
  • What is your greatest accomplishment?
    JK: I made a lot of friends, and they have stuck. They all have something nice to say about me too!
